Proenza Schouler Through Harmony Korine's Lens

“youth and prep school and kids rebelling against it”
stills from the film

...soft, lilting voice over, the girls skulk around schoolyards, spray graffiti, drink, smoke, pose and embrace, evoking the loneliness, confusion and overwhelming wonder of growing up.

Korine himself puts a more defiant spin on the film: “It’s about girls who sleep in abandoned cars and set things on fire. It’s about the great things in life.

HIPSTER FASHION AND THE "BEAT"

HIPSTER...a slang term that first appeared in the 1940s, and was revived in the 1990s and 2000s often to describe types of young, recently-settled urban middle class adults and older teenagers with interests in non-mainstream fashion and culture, particularly alternative music, indie rock, independent film, magazines such as Vice and Clash, and websites like Pitchfork Media.

Beat (adj.) -- (1) tired, exhausted. Ex., "You look beat" or "I feel beat." (2) lacking anything. Ex, "I am beat for my cash", "I am beat to my socks" (lacking everything).
Beat it out (v.) -- play it hot, emphasize the rhythym.
Beat up (adj.) -- sad, uncomplimentary, tired.
Beat up the chops (or the gums) (v.) -- to talk, converse, be loquacious.
